After 2 weeks of awesome adventures with some of my best Whistler friends, my road trip around British Columbia and the Rockies is now up! It was the most beautiful road trip I have ever been on – the scenery was out of this world.
Vancouver Island was the first stop on our road trip, as out of the 8 of us only 4 of us would continue on to the Rockies. Due to the late ferry time, we got into Nanaimo (the ferry port) at about 6:30pm and then it was a 3 hour drive to Tofino, so we decided to stay in a hostel that first night. We couldn’t find anywhere to stay in Tofino that had 8 beds available, so we decided to stay in Uclulet, a little town about 30 minutes away from Tofino. It was a cute little town, however you wouldn’t really need more than a day or two there. The next 2 nights we drove up to Tofino and camped at Bella Pacifica, a campground right next to the beach.
Tofino was one of my favorite little towns ever – a little hippy surf town, right up my ally (in saying this, I am also a city girl… as well as a mountains girl…). The campsite – Bella Pacifica – was a great location being beachfront (although you would need a car to get into town), and in well-kept condition. There was a fire pit at each campsite so you could have campfires, and you are also allowed campfires on the beach until 11pm.
We spent a day surfing, a must do for the surf town! Although the waves weren’t very big when we were there, it was perfect for someone like me still learning. There are a ton of surf schools around as well with pretty good rates compared to other surf towns I’ve been to. We surfed at Cox Beach, however there is also North and South Chesterman which are really popular. We quickly snuck a peek at Long Beach, however you have to pay a fee of about $8 to be on the beach so we didn’t bother with that one!
Another hugely popular activity in Tofino is whale watching. We didn’t do this as our budgets were too tight, however I know a few people who have done it and all of them have said they spotted whales. Although we did spot an Orca on the ferry, that was pretty unreal!
This blog post wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t mention the incredible taco truck that was so delicious we went back twice. Tacofino is located at the back of a car parking lot at 1184 Pacific Rim Hwy. They sell the BEST tacos ever. The fish tacos are a must have – and only about $4.50 a pop! When we were there we had about 10 people in front of us in line, however we heard the person in front of us saying he was there in July and there was a 40 person line so it is really popular in the midst of summer.
Tofino was so amazing that I could write a whole essay on it, so instead I will let you see for yourself!
