That’s A Wrap!

2013… You have treated me pretty nicely! Please keep it up for next year, it will be pretty hard to top the year I have had!

2013 was a massive growth year for me. FINALLY moving out of home for the first time at the start of the year, and by the end of the year living on the other side of the world in Canada… with a lot of fun times (and not so fun times) thrown in!

Here is just a little taste of what my year involved….

JANUARY was filled with the beach, parties, hikes, sunshine….

FEBRUARY was the month I moved out of home! Also the month of the Rugby 7s in Wellington!

MARCH was the arrival off a couple of cute new flatmates. Finally became a bit of a cat person.

APRIL I just casually WON A TRIP TO HAWAII!!!

MAY… we were still in Hawaii for the start of May, then came back too broke to do anything else for that month…

JUNE I started (or attempted) to get serious about saving for Canada… but I did treat myself to a night at Phantom of the Opera and a few day trips around Wellington!

JULY was the month of the biggest party of the year- the Flight Centre Ball! And of course they went all out as usual… Mad Hatters Tea Party Flight Centre Style!

AUGUST I had a mid winter Christmas party with my friends! Tried to spend as much time with friends as possible in my last 2 months in New Zealand!

SEPTEMBER was my last month in New Zealand! Finished up work a little early so I could spend as much time with friends and family as possible, played tourist in my city as well as had my leaving party.

OCTOBER the adventure began! Spent some time in Vancouver and Victoria before making my way to Whistler to settle down in my new home. Also started this blog, to keep in touch with everyone back home and to potentially turn it into something more!

NOVEMBER Whistler came to life! The snow started falling, the village started pumping… and got to see my first ice hockey game! (Pretty much the only game the Canucks won this season…)

DECEMBER and Winter is finally kicking in! Had my first White Christmas as well as started snowboarding (well trying…)

So I think all-in-all I have had a pretty good year! I am so grateful for everything I have been blessed with this year, and I will treasure this one forever. I hope 2014 brings more adventure, more friendships and more amazing memories!

  1. You’ve done so much! That’s so amazing! I’ve been thinking a lot about going on a working holiday to Canada but I haven’t travelled overseas before….I was planning to do Europe first but maybe after! Do you have any tips for beginner travellers?

I just read all of your blog posts (guilty) and I’m so envious of all the places you have been, very inspiring though! Your blog deserves more recognition!

Hope you’re having an awesome day/night!
    Sending love from aus xx

    • Thanks for the blog love! 🙂

I LOVE Canada- it is a perfect place for a first time traveller as it isn’t a huge culture shock for us kiwis/ozzies, but it is still beautiful and exciting. A lot of the people I am working with over here that went through Working Holiday Club as well are going to Europe afterwards- so if you want to travel around with your new friends after Canada it is perfect! Also since there are so many people from the UK and Europe over here you will have more friends in cities over there 🙂

The Working Holiday Club was a really good company to go through- they made the whole process so simple, and having a job lined up before you go makes the move a lot less stressful!

Let me know if you have any questions about Canada or anything, will be happy to chat! 🙂

  2. Oh I love the sound of that….Just casually going to Europe after! I definitely have my eyes set on going to Canada next winter season! I found your blog through TWHC’s website and I’ve heard a lot of good stuff about them so I’m pretty sold on going through them. I would be horrible at setting everything up myself hah!

New York would have been incredible! How early did you book before you left for Canada? How much money would you recommend saving before going? I’m so excited to see snow! Do you get a few days off a week there to explore? Sorry for all the newby questions!

    • Haha that’s ok I could talk about Whistler forever!

I booked my flights around about July I think (i can’t really remember!) when Air New Zealand had a sale on. A lot of the people flying over from Oz found Air New Zealand or Hawaiian Airlines to be their best option. In terms of money it depends if you are going to be buying gear over here- I took around $4000 but that also covered my New York flights. I also got most of my gear second hand over here. There is a facebook page called Whistler Buy and Sell where people sell snowboards/jackets/slow cookers (literally everything!) for really cheap.

Most jobs you will be working 4 days on/3 off- working up to 10 hours a day. My job in reservations is 5 on 2 off, which kind of sucks coz I don’t get up the mountain as much as I would like but I get guarenteed 40 hours pretty much every week where as some other roles it may be less than this if it isn’t busy.

Hope this helps and feel free to shoot more questions my way!! 🙂

      • I’d love to do a New York trip while I’m in the area (Kind of)! I’m in love with the idea of going so I’ll get there some day hah! Thank you so much for answering my questions, very helpful! ! I’ll definitely let you know if I have any more! 🙂
